Walmart’s Inclusive Shopping Experience Grows in Arizona

Walmart expanded its commitment to accessibility by introducing Caroline’s Carts into all its Arizona stores. These specially designed carts offer essential support to caregivers of children and adults with disabilities, making it easier for them to navigate all Walmart locations across Arizona. This multimillion-dollar investment aligns with Walmart’s broader mission to champion inclusivity and accessibility in every store, ensuring a more seamless and inclusive shopping experience for all customers.

“Helping our customers save money and live better is more than our mission – it’s our driving force,” said Cedric Clark, executive vice president of store operations at Walmart. “Equipping our stores with Caroline’s Carts provides some relief to parents and caregivers who need this tool and know it’s available at their Walmart. Whether they’re caring for someone with a disability or a temporary injury, the carts support our customers when and how they need it every time they come through our doors.”

Caroline’s Carts represent just one part of Walmart’s larger initiative to make its stores more accessible and inclusive. This nationwide rollout is intended to create a more inclusive shopping experience, accommodating a diverse range of needs and ensuring that all customers, regardless of ability, feel comfortable and supported when shopping. Walmart’s vision for inclusivity doesn’t stop with adaptive carts, however. Last year, the retailer launched sensory-friendly hours in all stores across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, from 8am to 10am daily. During these hours, Walmart dims its lights, pauses radio broadcasts, and sets TV monitors to a still screen, creating a calmer, more sensory-friendly environment. Initially scheduled only for the back-to-school season, the overwhelmingly positive customer feedback encouraged Walmart to extend sensory-friendly hours year-round.

Caroline’s Carts are built to provide caregivers with a reliable, accommodating solution for individuals with disabilities, children, seniors, and others with limited mobility. The seats can hold between 35 and 250 pounds, meeting the needs of a broad range of users. Walmart’s plan includes equipping all Supercenters with two Caroline’s Carts and all Neighborhood Markets with at least one, totaling roughly 8,000 carts nationwide. With distribution ongoing, Walmart expects all stores to be equipped by early 2025. This substantial order from Walmart exceeds all previous orders for Caroline’s Carts since their introduction in 2012, underscoring the retailer’s commitment to inclusive shopping.

With these advancements, Walmart continues to set the standard for inclusive shopping practices, providing tools and features that make stores accessible to everyone. As part of its dedication to enhancing each customer’s experience, Walmart’s ongoing accessibility initiatives reflect a steadfast commitment to building an environment where every customer feels welcomed and supported.
